Research Fellowships

The Royal Academy of Engineering offers Research Fellowhips on a yearly basis to outstanding early career engineering researchers, who are hosted by a UK higher education institute/university. These highly prestigious five-year Research Fellowships are designed to promote excellence in engineering by providing support for high-quality candidates to become future research leaders.

Research Fellowships are aimed at early career researchers from all branches of engineering who about about to complete their PhD or who have up to four years postdoctoral experience.

Applications are capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £500,000 over the 5-year period, at 80% of full economic costs.

 

Engineering for Development Research Fellowships

The Engineering for Development Research Fellowships are a Royal Academy of Engineering scheme funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The Royal Academy of Engineering has funding to award four researchers an Engineering for Development Research Fellowship, as long as the proposed research project meets the official ODA guidelines.

Applications are capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £500,000 over the 5-year period, at 80% of full economic costs.

An additional £25,000 per annum is available, and does not have to be claimed at 80% of full economic costs or be match funded by the host institution. This funding is ring fenced to develop internationl collaborations, in order to deliver the research outputs and build pathways to positively impact or contribute to the sustainable economic or social development of a country or countries on the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list.

  • The institutional cap for this call is 3 applications

The University of St Andrews does not have a specific fund for this scheme and match funding for these fellowships will be required from the host’s school’s salary budget. Schools are invited to submit no more than two applications. Applications for consideration by the Vice Principal Researcn and Innovation should be send via the hosting school/department to [email protected] no later than 12 noon, 23 August 2018 . The internal application (which should be submitted by the Director of Research for the relevant school) should include the following information:

  • A completed intention to submit form
  • A copy of the applicant’s CV (maximum 3 x A4 pages)
  • A supporting statement provided by the Head of School: including the strategic relevance of the proposed candidate’s research to the department; the facilities
